From Taiwan to China as well as to the world, Taipei Chinese Orchestra this year has achieved several breakthroughs in musical exchanges. In the second half of this year, the Orchestra is scheduled to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York, marking the first of its kind in Taiwan to stage in such venue.
Taipei Chinese Orchestra has also collaborated with Shanghai Chinese Orchestra to exchange musicians, showcasing two-sided specialties and features.
In 2011, the Taipei-based TCO had toured to the United States and to Europe in 2012, respectively, hoping to raise international recognition for Chinese Orchestra of Taiwan.
This time, US-based Chinese pipa virtuoso WU Man will lead the Taipei Chinese Orchestra's debut at Carnegie Hall. The ensemble, conducted by CHENG Li-Pin, will present four U.S. premieres. The concert titled “Honor and Joy in Carnegie ─ 2018 TCO US Tour” will perform classic Chinese music such as “the Parade of Gods ” by composer CHEN Shu-si along with “Soul of the Loess ” by composer QU Wen-Jun.
Taipei Chinese Orchestra has signed an agreement earlier this year with Shanghai Chinese Orchestra in musical exchanges including musical talents and performances. A concert will be performed jointly by three musicians of Taipei Chinese Orchestra along with the Shanghai-based ensemble. In the meantime, three other musicians from Shanghai Chinese Orchestra will visit Taipei Chinese Orchestra as well.
In addition, a musical festival featuring two cities, Taipei and Shanghai, which will be led by the upand- coming Chinese conductor PENG Fei and young Taiwanese conductor CHIANG Chen- Hao, will present classic Chinese music such as “the Cresting Moon ”and“Confluence ”by the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra as well as“The Temple Square ”and“Floating Clouds, Flowing Water ”by the Taipei Chinese Orchestra.
Shanghai Chinese Orchestra's principal erhu musician DUAN Aiai, principal flutist QIAN Jun, Taipei Chinese Orchestra's principal suona musician LIN Tzu-You, and concertmaster CHEN Hui-Chun will join the series of concerts. With its continued tradition of artistic excellence and collaborations with outstanding artists of Chinese music in Taiwan, TCO will unwaveringly promote exceptional Chinese music to the world.
