The Taipei Chinese Orchestra (TCO) will celebrate the 40th anniversary this year, starting from September, its birthday month. With years of devotion of former and present general directors, music directors, conductors and team members to the group, TCO has gradually grown in prominence, and developed its own unique sound. In addition, the group has boldly enabled innovation based on the rich tradition these years, which also opens up new possibilities for further development in the future.

To celebrate the milestone anniversary, TCO curates ten of series concerts in the upcoming season featuring the theme titled “Top Musicians Celebrating Reunion.” The event encompasses more than 40 performances which will present audiences significant progress and the achievements we have made.

The 2019/20 season includes series of performances such as titled General Director Series, Music Director Series, TCO Star Series, Classic Representation Series and many others. TCO's General Director Series will invite two former directors David CHEN and CHUNG Yiu-Kwong to cooperate with the group, and I, as present general director, will also lead TCO to premiere at the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) in the southern Taiwan in next year.

In addition, TCO will also invite three music directors, including YAN Huichang of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, YEN Tsung of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra and SHAO En, TCO's former music director to present a superb live music experiences with the group. Another TCO Star Series will invite former conductors such as LI Shi-ming and GUO Lian-chang and CHEN Chun-Shen with former and current members of the group to share the stage.

It is worth mentioning the opening concert of the season will represent the classic repertoire of the leading group over 40 years, such as Gongs & Drums , the opening piece of the first concert presented by TCO since it founded in 1979. The others include The Butterfly Lovers violin concerto, the 60th anniversary after its premiere; Yellow River Chorus , the 80th anniversary of its premiere, as well as The Chin Dynasty Tema Cotta Soldies, the most-played music piece of TCO, and a crossover with the Ju Percussion Group called “Boundary ,”the sensational show premiered in 2016.

Other highlights include Principal Conductor Selection, Chinese Music Navel Force Series, and many others; later next year, the organizer will launch a musical as well as host a 2020 Taipei International Conducting Competition with the Taipei Symphony Orchestra.

The 40th birthday is a significant landmark, it has been a long road and not an easy process to go through for the group. During this special time, we would like cordially to invite everyone to join us for a gala musical celebration.
